GENDER & SEXUALITY
RESOURCES FOR CHRISTIANS

Navigating the topics of gender and sexuality can be a confusing journey in our age, but we want to support you as best we can.  Pastor David has compiled a list of the most helpful Christian books on this topic, and we pray that these will be a helpful resource to you as you continue to study more on what God’s Word teaches.  His thoughts on each book can be found below.

BOOKS ON GENDER

Andrew T. Walker

This is an excellent book on what the Bible teaches on gender.  It does a great job of looking at what the Scriptures say and developing a practical theology out of it.  It’s not overly long, so it’s accessible to anyone who wants to check it out.  We recommend starting with this book.

Abigail Shrier
While not a Christian book, it’s a very helpful look at why so many teenage girls are identifying as boys.  Our church does not endorse some of the beliefs of this book (particularly on sexuality and adult gender dysphoria), but even so, we still found this book helpful to understanding what many of our teens are facing.

Preston Sprinkle

This is a deeper dive into the issue of gender and being transgender.  Sprinkle has interacted with many in the transgender community and his heart for them to know Christ is evident.  He also looks at what the Scripture says about the issue, but can be a little light on his Scriptural applications at times.

BOOKS ON SEXUALITY

Sam Allberry
A short and excellent introduction to the issue of same-sex attraction.  Allberry does a fantastic job of looking at what the Scriptures say and also talking about his own temptations.  We highly recommend this book.

Christopher Yuan
If you are looking for something that is a lot more theological on this issue, this is the book for you.  Like Sam Allberry’s book, it looks at what the Bible teaches, but just in a deeper manner.

Christopher Yuan
This is a biography about a man who was once deep into the gay community.  If you have a child who has embraced a gay lifestyle, this book is a must read for any Christian parent.  It is highly recommended!

Rachel Gilson
This book is a bit more biographical than Allberry’s but does an excellent job of answering some of the more difficult questions for how a Christian who feels same-sex attracted should then live.

Nancy Pearcy
This book is exceptionally well done.  It studies how our current culture has completely downgraded its view of the human body, but how Scripture sees the body as incredibly important.  It covers the issues of being transgender, same-sex attraction, hook-up culture, and much more.

Rosaria Butterfield
A strong book by the former lesbian professor turned Christ follower.  Butterfield speaks very strongly, so you have to be willing to digest that, but otherwise, it’s an excellent deep dive into a number of hot topics, including gender and sexuality (of which Butterfield is very knowledgable).

Stan & Brenna Jones
This is a series of 4 different books (and a parents’ guide).  Each book is a book on sex, gender, and sexuality that you can read to or with your child.  They are age appropriate (3-5, 5-8, 8-12, 12-16) and thus they go deeper into the harder topics with each subsequent book.

Carl Trueman
This book is admittedly deeper in philosophy and theology, but Trueman does a great job of helping his readers understand how we came to live in a world in which LGBTQ+ thinking became a culturally acceptable idea.  He traces the history of how our culture came to accept these ideas as normal.

The Holy Sexuality Project

This is a gospel-centered video series/study.  It has 12 different sessions which cover the most pressing issues related to sexuality and gender.  This can be a great resource for parents and teens as well.
