2024 RENOVATION U CLASSES
Classes for 2024 are closed. We are looking forward to Renovation U 2025!
FIRST STEPS
TEACHER: John McCormick
In First Steps, you will get an excellent grounding in the foundations of Christianity. You will find this class helpful whether you are new to Christianity or you have been a Christian for a while but have never had an opportunity to really study your faith. You will study questions like: why did Jesus die, how do we know the Bible is true, does God speak to me, and why do bad things happen. Note: All students must start with this class unless they've taken a theology class within the last few years.
FAQs
-
What is Parent & Child Dedication?Parent & Child Dedication is a special occasion for parents to publicly commit to raising their children in a godly household and dedicating their children to God. Parent & Child Dedication is not infant baptism.
-
Is there a place where I can nurse or bring my child if they are crying?Yes! We have a Parent/Child Room located in our Adult Wing, just past the family bathroom on the left. We livestream the Worship Center to the Parent/Child Room so you don’t have to miss out on the service for nursing or a crying child.
-
How will I be notified if my child needs me?On occasion, we may contact you if your child is in need of your assistance. If that is the case, you will receive a text from one of our check in volunteers letting you know to come back to your child’s classroom. Please keep your phone accessible (on silent or preferably vibrate) so that we can reach you. We may also from time to time put a code on the Worship Center screens if we have been unable to reach a child’s parent via text message.
-
How often do you do Parent & Child Dedications?Parent & Child Dedication takes place twice a year, typically in the months of January and June.
-
How do I sign up for Parent & Child Dedication? When the next date is announced, you can sign up through the Renovation Church app or by at the Welcome Table in the church lobby.
-
How do I know my kids are safe? All Kids volunteers and staff are background-checked and trained before they start volunteering—so know that your kids are in safe hands. In addition to the background check and training, we always have a minimum of two volunteers in every room so that no adult and child are alone together. Every Sunday at Kids Check-In, your family is assigned a random, alpha-numeric code that is on your child’s name tag and your security tag. That security tag is required to pick up your child in their classroom after the service.
-
Can I take the classes in any order? All students must complete Studying God’s Word before they take other classes. After taking Studying God’s Word, it is recommended that you take Theology 1 followed by Theology 2, however, the remaining classes can be taken in any order.
-
Is there a cost to take classes? There is no fee to join a Renovation U class. However, students are asked to print their own curriculum for Studying God’s Word, Theology 1, and Theology 2, which may incur a small cost. Additionally, Theology 1 and Theology 2 share a supplemental book that students are asked to purchase. If any of these costs present a financial burden, please reach out to Pastor John at john@renovationchurch.org.
-
What are Renovation U classes like?Starting in early June, classes meet at Renovation Church once a week for 8-9 weeks. Each class is lecture-based, and most classes include time for small group activities and discussion. The curriculum, written by Renovation Church, is designed for adults and high school students. Classes range in size from 30-60 people and meet in the Adult Wing classrooms (First Steps will meet in the Worship Center).
-
What if I have other questions? If you have any other questions about Renovation U, you can talk to the volunteers at the Welcome Table on Sunday mornings or you can send an email to Pastor John at john@renovationchurch.org.
-
Will child care be provided?Renovation U Child Care will be available during Tuesday night classes at a cost of $5 per child.

Is there homework? All classes have some homework (except for First Steps). That homework will include some combination of the following: study work in the Bible, answering questions in the curriculum, and reading short sections of supplemental books. The amount of homework varies by class, but in most cases it can be completed within an hour or two each week.
-
Which class should I start with?It is recommended that everyone starts with First Steps as it gives a foundational overview of Christianity, and each class session includes a unique “ask me anything” Q&A time. If you have taken a theology class in the last few years, you do have the option to start in Studying God’s Word instead.
-
Can I take more than one class at a time?It is not recommended that students to take more than one class at a time. This is to give sufficient time to learn what is taught in class each week and to complete homework. However, taking more than one class at a time is not prohibited.
